Mary McCabe, a soprano hailing from Downpatrick, N.Ireland, has been connected with Northern Ireland Opera since its conception, beginning as a Young Artist and later an Associate Artist. Roles with the company have included: ‘Violetta’ (Cover - La Traviata - Verdi), ’Mademoiselle Silberklang' (The Impresario - Mozart), 'First Maiden' (Turandot - Puccini), 'Belinda' (Dido and Aeneas - Purcell), ‘Rapunzel’ and ‘Cinderella’s Mother’ (Into the Woods - Sondheim). Mary featured in the award-winning film ‘Old Friends and Other Days’ directed by Cameron Menzies, NIOpera and has also performed live on Sky Arts in ‘Live at the Waterfront with the company. Mary graduated First Class in Music and French from The Queen’s University of Belfast and with Distinction in her Masters degree from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Whilst studying in Scotland, Mary was awarded First Prize in the Norma Grieg French Song Competition. She was also a winner of the New York International Opera Project Competition and awarded first place for singing Bellini in the Italian Concorso Internazionale Lions Canto Lirico. Mary has appeared on numerous occasions as a guest soloist for BBC Radio Ulster, appearing on both 'Sounds Classical' and 'Classical Connections'. She has been generously supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland throughout the years through grants and awards.
